Vice President Kamala Harris is poised to bring transformative change for Black men in America by offering the tools and resources necessary to create wealth, uplift their families, and lead their communities. Through a comprehensive Opportunity Agenda, Harris addresses the historical barriers that have prevented Black men from realizing their full potential, focusing on economic empowerment, health equity, and criminal justice reform.
A Vision for Economic Opportunity
Vice President Harris envisions an “Opportunity Economy,” where Black men have the chance to thrive. She recognizes the untapped ambition within the Black male community, which has often been overlooked in the political process. Harris’s goal is clear: to provide Black men with the resources they need to achieve financial independence and success, all while dismantling the systemic barriers that have historically hindered their progress.
As part of this vision, Harris launched a nationwide Economic Opportunity Tour aimed at helping Black entrepreneurs secure the capital they need to build businesses, create wealth, and strengthen their communities. During her tour, she met with Black men across the country who shared their struggles and ambitions. Their stories helped shape her Opportunity Agenda, which is designed to lower costs, expand economic access, and ensure that Black men can support their families and contribute to the economic vitality of their communities.
Key Components of the Opportunity Agenda
Harris’s Opportunity Agenda is multifaceted and includes a range of initiatives aimed at building wealth, fostering education and employment, and addressing critical health issues that disproportionately affect Black men. Among the highlights:
- Forgivable Loans for Black Entrepreneurs: Harris plans to provide one million forgivable loans to help Black men and others start or expand their businesses, particularly those facing barriers to traditional capital access.
- Education and Mentorship: Harris champions pathways to good-paying jobs through education and mentorship programs, especially in high-demand industries. She also supports initiatives to recruit more Black men into the teaching profession, where they can serve as role models for future generations.
- Cryptocurrency Protections: With a significant portion of Black Americans investing in cryptocurrency, Harris advocates for a regulatory framework to protect their assets and investments.
- National Health Equity Initiative: Harris will address pressing health issues such as sickle cell disease, diabetes, prostate cancer, and mental health that disproportionately affect Black men. Her plan includes expanding access to preventive screenings and affordable treatments.
- Legalizing Marijuana: Harris supports legalizing recreational marijuana, with a focus on ensuring that Black men, historically over-policed for marijuana offenses, can access opportunities in this emerging industry.
A Stark Contrast with Trump’s Record
In sharp contrast, Donald Trump’s administration worsened conditions for Black men, with significant job losses, business closures, and a lack of support during the COVID-19 pandemic. His divisive rhetoric and policies, including his infamous call for the death penalty for the Exonerated Five and dismissive remarks about Black protestors, have only deepened racial tensions. If re-elected, Trump’s Project 2025 agenda would exacerbate these harms by cutting funding for urban education, reviving discriminatory policing practices, and slashing essential safety net programs like Medicare and Social Security.
Lowering Costs and Empowering Black Families
Harris recognizes the financial burdens Black men face in providing for their families. Her plan aims to lower costs for essentials like housing, child care, and groceries. She proposes expanding affordable housing, tripling the number of first-time Black homeowners, and cutting unnecessary costs in areas like rent and utilities. Additionally, her Child Tax Credit expansion would provide much-needed financial relief for Black families.
Investing in Community Leadership
Harris is committed to investing in mentorship and leadership development programs that uplift young Black men. By expanding proven community mentorship initiatives and creating opportunities for Black men to lead in their neighborhoods, Harris is setting the stage for the next generation of community leaders.
A Commitment to Justice Reform
Recognizing the systemic injustices that have plagued Black men in the legal system, Harris is pushing for comprehensive criminal justice reform. From legalizing marijuana to reforming policing practices, her policies aim to rebuild trust between law enforcement and Black communities. Through the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, she seeks to ban chokeholds and no-knock warrants, while encouraging community-based policing that hires from within the neighborhoods it serves.
A Promise of Hope and Progress
Vice President Kamala Harris has long championed the causes of Black men, from her days as California Attorney General to her current role as Vice President. She understands the unique challenges they face and is committed to delivering real, measurable change. Her Opportunity Agenda for Black Men offers a clear and hopeful path forward—one that equips them with the tools to build wealth, lead their communities, and secure their families’ futures.
As Harris steps into her role as a national leader, she is not just promising to listen to Black men but to deliver on the promises that will unlock their full potential. Her presidency will be one where Black men have a partner in the White House, ready to support their dreams and remove the barriers that have held them back for far too long.
