Dr. Shawn Roseburgh Is Building the Future One Country, One Community at a Time

“I’m just a little Black kid from Harlem… and somehow, we’re building global impact. I’m still in awe every day.” ~ Dr. Shawn Roseburgh

What begins in Harlem rarely stays in Harlem. That’s certainly the case with Shawn Roseburgh, founder of Emerge International and The Black Traveler, whose story is a living testimony of transformation, resilience, and what’s possible when community, culture, and creativity converge. From the streets of East Harlem to the classrooms of Nyack College, from DJ booths in Miami to dirt fields in Nairobi, Shawn’s journey is a symphony of purpose rooted in service, sparked by hustle, and sustained by faith.

At the core of his movement is a simple truth: “We are privileged, but that privilege must be used for purpose.” And that’s exactly what Roseburg is doing bridging continents and communities with intentional love and visionary action.

From Harlem Hustle to Global Mission

Raised in the Wagner Houses of East Harlem, Shawn’s first taste of entrepreneurship came from selling lemonade and baked goods near the Apollo Theater. “Those early days taught me two things: how to build something from scratch, and that if you love your people, you’ll always find a way to serve them,” he says. His early connection to church laid a spiritual foundation, but it was music that cracked open a world of possibility. From spinning records to producing concerts and managing tours, Roseburgh was embedded in the entertainment world working alongside Southern legends like Trick Daddy, Trina, and T-Pain before his mainstream rise.

But when family life and a desire for greater purpose called, Shawn pivoted. “Entertainment gave me access. But I wanted more than access I wanted impact.”

Bridging Policy and the People

That yearning for impact led Shawn to an unexpected pivot politics. After a successful stint supporting local campaigns in Florida, he became Director of the New York State Senate Majority Leader’s office at just 30 years old. “To go from the club scene to crafting policy felt surreal,” he says. “But I always knew community was my true calling.”

His unique ability to blend pop culture with public service sparked fresh ideas like bringing college students and aspiring entertainers into government forums, infusing political spaces with new voices and lived experience. That same innovative spirit would soon spark one of the most groundbreaking study abroad initiatives in New York state history.

The Trip That Changed Everything

While serving as Assistant Director of the HEOP program at Nyack College, Shawn proposed a radical expansion: sending low-income, first-generation college students abroad. “Why should only privileged students study abroad? Let’s give our kids the world,” he challenged.

That world turned out to be Kenya.

And that trip changed everything.

Over three weeks, Roseburgh and his students engaged in service learning with orphanages and schools. But more than curriculum, it was connection. “That trip redefined what education could look like. It gave me a new lens and it gave birth to The Black Traveler.”

Even after the college shuttered, Roseburgh stayed connected to the communities in Kenya and beyond, laying the foundation for the deeply personal, globally-minded work that defines his mission today.

All Black Everything in Cartegena

In yet another groundbreaking move, Shawn Roseburgh made history by opening CasaNoir, the first Black-owned hotel in the metropolitan heart of Cartagena, Colombia. Born out of a spontaneous trip during the COVID-19 lockdowns when Colombia remained open while most of the world shut down Shawn fell in love with the country’s culture, people, and potential. “I didn’t plan to stay. But something in my spirit said, ‘Build here,’” he recalls. CasaNoir is more than a hotel it’s a cultural sanctuary. With an adjoining art gallery that showcases Afro-Colombian and diasporic talent, CasaNoir embodies Shawn’s vision of Black excellence, ownership, and hospitality on a global scale. “Representation in global travel and hospitality is rare. CasaNoir is our answer our stake in the ground that says we belong everywhere.”

What’s Happening in Ethiopia: A Movement, Not a Moment

Shawn’s current chapter unfolds in East Africa, particularly Ethiopia where he’s fusing culture, charity, and creativity into something revolutionary.

“I went to Ethiopia just to explore. Now I’m building a football league, launching a fashion show platform, and trying to reimagine what opportunity looks like for everyday Ethiopians.”

It started with a TikTok video. A local football coach reached out, asking for support for his team of 90 young boys many of whom were at risk of being swept into cycles of addiction, poverty, or violence. “I knew nothing about football,” Shawn laughs. “But I knew about purpose. I knew about community.”

That first charity football game was a wild success. But more importantly, it sparked a vision: a continent-wide, youth-centered, charity football league powered by The Black Traveler. Now, young people in Kenya, Ghana, Gambia, and Nigeria are all reaching out, eager to join the movement.

“The goal is simple,” Shawn explains. “Use the world’s most popular sport to inspire the world’s most overlooked kids. And we’re doing it all for charity, all for love.”

And he’s not stopping there.

Dr. Shawn is launching EMERGE, a fashion and entertainment platform that spotlights emerging creatives starting in Addis Ababa. “Ethiopians are obsessed with fashion. But they don’t always have access. That’s what we’re doing—building the infrastructure, creating platforms, and letting the world see their brilliance.”

EMERGE isn’t just about runway shows. It’s about creating systems of exposure and opportunity across fashion, music, dance, and film while always ensuring that a portion of proceeds go back into local community development efforts.

At the heart of Emerge International Addis lies a groundbreaking fashion showcase — a bold statement of Ethiopia’s rising creative power. Scheduled for July 5, 2025, at the AICC in Addis Ababa, the runway brings together Ethiopia’s top emerging designers and models, marking their debut on a global stage. This isn’t just a display of clothes it’s a celebration of identity, artistry, and access.

Dr. Shawn emphasizes the show’s mission: to give local talent exposure, professionalism, and a pathway to global opportunity. He notes that what might seem standard in Western markets online casting, ticketed events, and organized showcases is still revolutionary in Ethiopia. “We’re introducing digital casting platforms, ticket sales, and international production values,” Shawn explains. The goal is twofold: to uplift designers and models and to establish sustainable infrastructure that outlasts a single show.

Social media buzz confirms the energy: giveaways, live interviews, and viral TikTok videos herald a cultural moment . One description summarizes it best: “History isn’t waiting. It’s walking the runway.”

By spotlighting emerging talent and embedding digital-first systems, Shawn is not just hosting a fashion event he’s nurturing a movement that empowers creatives in Ethiopia and sets the stage for future Emerge events across the globe.

Learn. Grow. Invest.

That’s not just a mantra it’s a movement.

Whether it’s building hotels in Colombia, sponsoring football gear in Ethiopia, mentoring students in New York, or creating global platforms that amplify marginalized voices, Shawn Roseburgh lives by one unwavering truth: “Learn. Grow. Invest. That’s what we’re about. And I don’t just mean money. I mean investing time. Investing belief. Investing love.”

And he’s not walking this path alone.

Today, as Ethiopia rises constructing one of Africa’s largest airports, expanding residential infrastructure, and pouring into the future of sport and youth culture Shawn sees more than just development. He sees destiny. “This is our moment,” he says. “We’re building something Africa’s never seen before. A charity sports league that centers Black boys. A fashion platform that amplifies African excellence. A community that invests back in itself.”

From Harlem to Addis. From Cartagena to Nairobi. From vision to victory.

Dr. Shawn Roseburgh isn’t just traveling the world.
He’s transforming it — with purpose, with people, and with power.
