A Journey Rooted in Community: From Greensboro to Broccoli City

Brandon McEachern’s journey from Greensboro, North Carolina, to the helm of one of the most dynamic cultural festivals in the country, Broccoli City, is a testament to the power of persistence, practicality, and passion for community. Founded as an Earth Day festival, Broccoli City has since grown into a beacon of Black culture, entrepreneurship, and community engagement, with music, social action, and celebration at its core. Brandon’s vision is not just about building a festival; it’s about crafting a movement that reflects the heartbeat of his community and the strength of collaboration.

Broccoli City: A Platform for Black Culture and Community Engagement

“It started off as an Earth Day Festival, but it always represented community,” Brandon explains. “It always represented us, for lack of better terms, you know what I’m saying? Like, I wanted to create a platform for Black folks, where music, culture, and giving back all intersected.” From its humble beginnings, Broccoli City has transformed into an event that draws thousands of people from across the country, making it one of the most significant festival weekends in the nation.

We ChipN: Volunteering for a Festival Experience

For Brandon McEachern, Broccoli City has always been more than just music—it’s about creating real, tangible impact in people’s lives. This vision led to the creation of “We ChipN,” an innovative initiative that allows individuals to volunteer in their communities in exchange for tickets to Broccoli City or other major festivals. “We understood that people in our community can’t always drop $200 on a festival ticket, so we said, why not let them volunteer in the community and earn their way in?” Brandon explains. Building on this, his “Power of One” program extends the concept even further, offering people opportunities to attend events like the Roots Picnic by engaging in community service. As Brandon puts it, “You want to give back anyway, but if I can give back and get tickets to see Meg Thee Stallion? I’m going to do that.” This approach blends social impact with entertainment, making Broccoli City not just a festival, but a platform for community upliftment and engagement, staying true to its mission of empowering people while providing unforgettable experiences.

Staying True to His Roots: Brandon’s Lifelong Commitment to People

Yet, despite his success, Brandon remains humble and focused on the work ahead. “I’m the same dude I’ve always been—always invested in people,” he reflects. “People are the currency out here, man. I’ve always been about the people, and that’s who I build for.”

Broccoli Con: Expanding Broccoli City’s Reach Beyond Music

His passion for community isn’t just reflected in Broccoli City but also in his dedication to creating spaces for people to thrive. One of his latest projects, “Broccoli Con,” extends the festival’s reach beyond music, focusing on career development, networking, and giving people the tools they need to succeed in their professional lives. Looking ahead, Brandon envisions launching “Broccoli Con Health,” a conference dedicated to engaging healthcare professionals and addressing health disparities within the Black community. “We’re excited about expanding, and I see us doing bigger festivals, more events in more cities, and really pushing Broccoli Con as a platform for career development and health awareness,” he says.

Practicality as a Mantra: The Kingdom of God is Practical

What makes Brandon’s journey even more remarkable is his unwavering commitment to practicality. “The kingdom of God is practical,” he often repeats. It’s a mantra that reflects his grounded approach to life and business. “It’s about being practical—applying practical thinking to this thing called life,” Brandon explains. “God blessed us with the tools. The blessing is in our feet. We’ve got to keep moving, keep growing.”

Inspiring the Next Generation of Festival Creators

Brandon’s success is not only a result of his work ethic but also his ability to inspire others to believe in themselves and their communities. He’s clear that creating something like Broccoli City takes courage and intentionality. “Just do the research, shoot that email, and get started,” he advises aspiring festival creators. “It doesn’t have to be big from the start. It’s about building something meaningful, even if it starts small.”

Belief and Legacy: Building a Movement for the Future

In many ways, Brandon McEachern’s story is one of unrelenting belief—belief in his community, belief in the power of collaboration, and belief in the idea that with practicality and purpose, anything is possible. “The practical thoughts are what get you there,” he insists. “That’s how you keep moving. That’s how you keep growing.”

From Greensboro to Los Angeles, from Broccoli City to a national movement, Brandon McEachern continues to carve out spaces that celebrate culture, community, and the power of giving back. In doing so, he has created not just a festival but a legacy—one that will resonate for generations to come.
